Promises that are kept are rare these days. Sadly, many of those are one’s leaders make and then break, which impact you and your career.

Wouldn’t you like to work for a leader who believes you are important, is committed to you, who is also faithful to their commitments? I would.

I’ve created a list below of seven promises I believe we in leadership can and should make to those who are entrusted to us. They aren’t easy to live up to, but they are important. As some “food for thought” to ponder, with each promise, I’ve chosen a corollary promise God makes to each of us. Thankfully, he never fails to keep his promises.

  1. I am always available for you when you need me. No matter how busy I am, I’ll make time for you because you are important to me.

God’s promise: I will always be with you.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

  1. I will protect you from unfair or unjust public criticism of others, as well as from bullying. Don’t be afraid to make me aware of what is happening to you.

God’s promise: I will protect you.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1

  1. Our team will rejoice with you when you experience success and support you when you fail.

God’s promise: I will surround you with those who will rejoice with you, will grieve with you, and will sustain you in prayer.

and let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,…encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

  1. I will answer your questions and provide guidance when you need it. I will not make decisions for you. Please don’t ask me “what should I do?”

God’s promise: I will answer you.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5

  1. I will provide opportunities for you to utilize and grow your skills. I didn’t hire you to do only one job, but to prepare you for whatever is next for you, whether it is in our organization or a different one.

God’s promise: I will provide for you.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

  1. I will provide a healthy work environment for you. It won’t be toxic or abusive. It will be an environment where you can be yourself and flourish.

God’s promise: I will give you peace.

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12: 17-18

  1. I will make certain you know how your work has impacted others on our team, other departments, or customers of ours.

God’s promise: I will bless others through you.

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 2 Corinthians 9:11

What do you think? Please provide feedback by posting a comment. Are these leadership promises reasonable? Would you want to work for a leader who would make these commitments to you?
